I really liked the idea of learning how to analyze large amounts of data and use specific tools such as RapidMiner or the R programming language.

Neus Montserrat

What were you doing before you signed up for our course?

She worked as Project Manager and Data Analyst in Barcelona in a marketing agency, carrying out marketing campaigns mainly for the main FMCG companies in the country.

What motivated you to start the course?

In my old job I was analyzing data from marketing campaigns and also data extracted from surveys, that was the part I liked the most but I only dedicated a small part of my time to it and I wanted to dedicate 100% to it. I found out about Ubiqum through an advertisement and started looking into who they were and what they did. I liked the idea of learning how to analyze large amounts of data and use specific tools to do so such as WEKA, Rapid Miner or the programming language “R”. My main motivation was to find a job as a Data Analyst.

Now that you have finished, what did you find most difficult during the course?

Since I hadn’t programmed since college, where I learned a bit of Stata language, when I started with R I found it difficult to write clean, readable, working code! Finally, with the help of mentors, peers, and many tutorials, I managed to solve all the problems I encountered.

Do you think our methodology has worked, and what would make you recommend Ubiqum?

The methodology works but requires great motivation, dedication and commitment on the part of the student. Here it is not worth “studying the day before the exam”, first because there are no exams, and second because the learning process is gradual. You could spend a whole afternoon struggling to understand something and go home without having understood it, but the next day, at 9 o’clock you would get to it and in 20 minutes you understood it, because your mind had had time to settle everything you had previously learned and it was easier for you to understand that concept. I don’t know how to explain it, but whoever has experienced it will agree with me.

It went very well for me and I plan to continue with the learning by doing methodology to learn everything I want to learn in depth for my new job.

Talking about your new job, what do you think, are you happy?

Today is my last day at Ubiqum and in a week I will start working, so I can not yet assess how it is going, although the first interviews look very good and I will be able to decide on what tools we will use since it is in a newly created department in a large international company.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to make a change in their professional life?

First, she should evaluate if she will be able to spend the next 20 weeks giving her all in the course. If so, great, because it will require a lot of dedication from Monday to Friday from 9 to 18h.
Then, show an attitude that demonstrates that you are sure of the change, because if you believe it yourself, your interlocutor (interviewer, mentor, partner …) will also believe it.
And finally, come with an open mind to make the most of the resources that give us in Ubiqum and if you have moments of blockage, talk to mentors or colleagues because we can all help each other to achieve our goals.

Finally, a question: How would you describe your experience at Ubiqum?

It has been an enriching experience on a professional and personal level, since you are in contact with people who have a very different background from you (science, literature, marketing, finance, law…) but all have the same objective, so we can all stand out in some aspect and contribute different knowledge. You learn a lot of things and they give you tools to face your return to the professional world successfully.
