Congratulations on your new job! Where are you currently working?
Thank you. I am working in a consultancy in the real estate part of the bank “la Caixa”. I manage IT projects, one of which is a Java development environment.
What were you doing before you signed up for our course?
I entered the programming world after not working for six or seven years, because I was taking care of my children. I started programming while I was at home with them and took the course while I was pregnant.
I started doing online courses in programming when my oldest son was born and then, between my second and third child, I decided that I wanted to design my own website to offer English classes. At first I wanted to occupy my time and learn something new at the same time. I also thought that if I wanted to get into programming and work in this field, I would need something a bit more formal, so I looked for courses.
Why did Ubiqum stand out as the best option?
I liked the fact that Java was offered at Ubiqum because many of the other intensive courses did not offer it. I also liked that it was structured as a job and that you were fairly autonomous in your learning. At Ubiqum, you work 9:00-17:00, Monday through Friday, and you still have a life. Some of the other courses I looked at were very intensive and it seemed like you would almost kill yourself trying to finish them.
Also, I liked that Ubiqum guarantees your employment and you only pay half at the beginning and the rest when you find a job. It shows that they have a lot of confidence in their methods and your ability to follow through later and get hired.
What was your main concern before starting the program?
I wondered, “Will I be the oldest, surrounded by 22-year-olds?”. But that wasn’t the case at all and once the course had started, we were all too focused to care about other things.
Signing up for the Web Developer course at Ubiqum Code Academy wasn’t like going to school or college, it was something I did for me. I knew that it was better for me to learn in this environment than to continue progressing little by little at home; it would have taken much longer and would have been much more frustrating.
Do you think our “Learning by Doing” methodology has been effective?
I liked that we worked on projects because it seemed more real. We would be assigned a specific task or project and we had to follow it ourselves. This was very helpful because that’s how it would be in a real job. Also, we were always given manageable amounts, so it was like doing a sprint and you got a lot of work done. It was very motivating because you accomplished something every week.
Why would you recommend Ubiqum?
I would recommend Ubiqum for the course and the people. I had a couple of very good tutors and this, combined with the material and the way we learned, made it an excellent experience. T
It’s a very good environment to learn in and the fact that everyone helped each other made everything flow easily. I met an awesome programmer who had a completely different way of looking at things and it was great to learn from each other.
