What is Data Science?
Data Science. Just 10 years ago nobody was talking about this topic and today it is one of the areas in which the demand for expert professional profiles is growing the most.
You probably have a friend, family member or acquaintance who has taken a coding bootcamp and started their digital career in technology. You’ve heard about a coding bootcamp but want to know more. Here we explain it to you…

ToggleWe live in a digital economy in which companies require digital skills and knowledge to function. However, the traditional education system does not consider these skills and knowledge to be important and most people finish their educational cycle without having developed the minimum essential skills to find a good job.
So, what options do I have to be able to make my digital transformation and improve my career options?
Before we get into the details, let’s introduce you to Luisa. She is a perfect example of someone who has decided to change her career and become a programmer in just 3 months.
Luisa is 32 years old and has worked as a laboratory technician since she finished her vocational training 12 years ago. She has developed part of her professional career in the UK where she lived until COVID came along and she decided to leave a good job to return to Spain. Then she decided to sign up for Ubiqum and in three months full time she completed the online course and shortly after finishing she found a job as a programmer.
Luisa, like many other testimonials you will find on our website is an example of how digital transformation works through an intensive and accelerated course.
Programming bootcamps made their debut in 2011 in the United States and have since been popping up in cities around the world.
A coding bootcamp is a new educational organization that offers intensive programs, 8 or 10 hours a day, for 3 to 5 months; hands-on, that train people to master highly demanded technology skills, mainly: web and mobile application programming, data analysis and UX/UI.
Unlike master’s courses, which remain theoretical and traditional with coursework and exams and a very academic approach, coding bootcamps are focused on practicing advanced professional skills. They are also very intensive and offer a commitment to employment.
If a traditional master’s degree at the university lasts between one and two years and a total of 300 to 500 hours of classes, plus as many hours of study, on the part of the student, to pass an exam, spread over 12, 18 or 24 months. In a coding bootcamp, students work as in an intense working day (8 or 10 hours), during a period of 10 to 20 weeks, on campus or online (They can be taken part-time as well)
The methodology is practical and puts more emphasis on the work processes that professionals use and that are valued in hiring and job offers than on the theories that only academics are interested in. Thus, a programming school focuses on learning complex professional skills, in a short period of time, in a very intense way in order to find a job at the end.
Nowadays there are many programming schools and more will appear, so it is important to know how to choose correctly. We know that Ubiqum students have followed a long and intense process of information, prior to making a decision. These are the most relevant aspects of the analysis to choose a bootcamp:
On the websites of the code academies, there is always the possibility of downloading or requesting the course program. It is important to have the programs of the schools that are being analyzed and share them with friends or relatives who are in the sector and can guide us on which of them is more complete or more updated.
Experts say that to become a specialist in any field requires 10,000 hours of training. It is obvious that in a bootcamp you do not reach that amount of hours, nor do you intend to. But between 9 weeks or 20 weeks there is an important difference. For someone whose goal is to get a job at the end, the length of the course is important. At Ubiqum we believe that, for many people, it takes a minimum of 12 weeks to be able to make a career change efficiently and this is the length of our courses. We also have fast track versions for people with some experience. And longer versions for people who want to go deeper in the field.
Bootcamps want to be innovative, but this does not imply that they all succeed. A coding bootcamp does not usually have neither subjects nor exams, but many do have master classes. At Ubiqum we use an active learning approach (Learning by Doing), 100% practical. Based on projects where students are active and practicing 100% of the time. This allows our students to learn in a deep and lasting way.
There are two types of bootcamps, those that aim to select the best, subjecting students to long endurance tests, 12 hours a day for 7 days a week and that only the most capable succeed. And those who, like Ubiqum, want each student to be able to give the best of himself. For this reason, our course is organized in days of 8 hours during 5 days a week, leaving the weekends free. In this way, students have the possibility to learn at the right pace and enjoy the weekly rest days necessary for learning to consolidate. In Ubiqum we have a very intense and demanding methodology but adapted to the real learning capabilities of people. We do not want our courses to be a marathon or a killer for only a few to succeed.
To what extent is a bootcamp confident in its methodology and the service it offers? The best test is to see to what extent it is committed to the future employment to which its students aspire. At Ubiqum we have two types of commitment to employment. In one, the student pays 50% at the beginning and the second 50% when he/she starts working. In the second, the student pays nothing at the beginning and pays for the course based on their future income (income share agreement). In both cases, we accept a commitment with the future employment to which the student aspires, sharing the risk.
Note: Consult the requisites to qualify for any of those formulas.
Since 2016, when we started our first course, we have experienced a remarkable evolution. We went from a conventional bootcamp format with groups of 15 to 20 people advancing together during the course, to a more flexible and personalized model. Our goal is to adjust to the time availability of our students, providing a personalized mentoring service.
We offer a methodology based on real, highly structured projects, where students face the same tasks they will encounter in the working world once they begin their new digital career. All this, backed by the constant and continuous support of a personal mentor, in addition to the flexible timetable we provide.
