We are going to focus this article on the world of web development by sharing some personal stories from our students.
– From mechanic to full stack developer
– Motivation: Career advancement
Ruben’s story is very inspiring. He went from working in a garage as a mechanic to starting his career in web development. Ruben was one of the first people to do the web development program with Java in 2016 and had many concerns when it came to making the switch. After all, his professional career had been in a completely different sector.
“I wasn’t sure if I could finish the program or if I would be able to figure it out. But when you finish your first project, which is to create a website, you feel proud and impressed with what you’ve accomplished in such a short time.”
Ruben finished the program and got a job as a full stack developer at Spaceboost (formerly RocketRoi) a month after finishing.
Now, 6 years later, Ruben has developed a long career as a software engineer in several companies developing and increasing his programming expertise.
Ruben’s advice for those considering a career change:
“It is not easy. It is quite a radical change, at least it was for me, and it is hard to accept that everything you have done up to that point, everything you have studied, all the training and years invested, will not be relevant. Like many people, I also had the financial pressure of having to support myself for 5 months while on the course and I had no idea if I would be able to get a job afterwards. But I did, and it didn’t take me long to find a job.
In the IT and technology sector there are always jobs and opportunities for career advancement. You will never stagnate. The only option is to move up, financially and professionally. “
– From audiovisual communication to full stack developer
– Motivations: economic stability and job satisfaction
Ruth Gascon is another good example of a successful career changer. Previously working in the world of audiovisual communication, she found that the jobs available did not interest her and that the salaries they offered demotivated her. When she realized that she needed a career change, the possibility of going into web development excited her. But, of course, she had her concerns:
“I had the idea that if you hadn’t been programming since you were little, you couldn’t do it anymore. I had taken a look at some programming languages and even signed up for some courses, but it seemed impossible to learn to program and I quit before I finished. It wasn’t until I joined Ubiqum that I realized that anyone, of any age, can learn to program and become a web developer, and with Java no less.”
What’s most inspiring about Ruth’s story is that, in learning to program, she found something she’s passionate about, something she hadn’t felt since she finished college.
Ruth’s advice to those who are considering changing careers: “Do it! But be patient.”
“Learning toprogram is worthwhile because the kinds of opportunities available to you are much better than in most industries.”
– From customer service representative to back-end developer
– Motivationsprofessional and economic growth
Jordi felt stuck in his previous job as a customer service representative and decided it was time for a change. After talking it over with a programmer friend, he felt it would be a good option to learn to program and start a career as a programmer. However, Jordi didn’t just have to think about himself. A father of three, the decision to quit his job and start a web development course was not taken lightly. But 5 months after starting his Java development program, Jordi landed his first job as a back-end developer for Seidor and he was thrilled!
Jordi’s advice for those considering a career change:
“Do it! I’m going to work at something I love, at a much higher salary, what more could I ask for? In my previous job I was totally stuck because there were no opportunities for professional or financial growth. On the other hand, as a developer, you always grow. I know that professionally and personally I am going to grow and this is very exciting. Enrolling in the Java development course is the best investment you can make. Before I started, I read that 98% of the students found jobs within two months of finishing the course, and now I can see that it’s absolutely true – I’m one of them! In fact, the vast majority of students in my group were hired before finishing the course.”
– From English teacher to technical solutions engineer
– Motivations: professional and economic growth
Andy moved to Barcelona from the UK and started working as an English teacher. However, he soon grew tired of the monotony of teaching and earning a low salary. As he had experience working alongside developers in a previous role, the idea of working as a developer appealed to him, so he did some searching and found Ubiqum. Of course, he was very hesitant and had the added pressure of having to support himself during the course. The great thing about Andy’s story is that the change exceeded his expectations. He wanted to find a job that paid him what he deserved and he found one that pays him double what he was making as an English teacher!
“The results have been fantastic! It has been a worthwhile investment.”
Andy’s advice for those who are considering a career change:
“It is amazing to see how far I have come in the last five months. I have made this great career change and now I can see that I have a bright future ahead of me. I would definitely recommend it! “
